An Overview of Ortho-K from Holistic Vision

If you’re suffering from refractive vision errors, there are many different options of treatment available that can get you seeing clearly again. One option you may not have heard about before is orthokeratology, often shortened to ortho-k. For those who are interested in learning more about this treatment option, there are a few important points that everyone should know about ortho-k. At Holistic Vision, we are here to serve the people of Northeast Philadelphia and Huntingdon Valley by providing them with as many options for vision correction as possible.

What is Ortho-K?

Ortho-K lenses are similar to contacts. You wear them the same way and care for them the same way, but how they correct your vision is a little different. The point of these lenses is that they can be worn overnight to reshape the surface of the eye. Similar to how braces gradually move teeth into the right position, ortho-k lenses shape your cornea into the ideal shape for clear vision.

Why is Ortho-K Used?

One of the major benefits of using ortho-k is that this is a treatment option that does not require surgery or the use of lenses throughout the day. There are a few reasons why an optometrist might prescribe ortho-k lenses. These lenses are often used to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia. These lenses can also be used to slow the progression of childhood myopia.

Do the Effects of Ortho-K Lenses Last Forever?

One of the most common questions that patients have about ortho-k is whether or not its effects will last forever. As long as people continue to wear the lenses at night, the treatment will last. If however, people do not continue to wear the lenses, the effect of ortho-k will wear off after a few days. Similar to wearing a retainer at night, people need to make sure they wear their ortho-k lenses as prescribed. Otherwise, the effect will wear off.

Anyone who would like to learn more about ortho-k should be sure to visit the eye doctor to learn more. There are many people who are good candidates for ortho-k therapy.

Reviews From Our Satisfied Patients

  • ""Dr. Sapossnek is an excellent optometrist. She has my complete trust. She is so thorough in her exams and includes parents in conversation and education, so I know and understand all the facets of my children's vision. All of the above [in the Patient Satisfaction Survey are] EXCELLENT, no need to elaborate. I feel fortunate to have found Dr. Sapossnek and am glad all of us can go to her-both for my child with vision therapy needs, daughter and I with glasses, and son who needs neither.""
